Is there a way to force AutoCAD to save what is displayed as a flat file? I've got some drawings in from an architect who apparently thinks that XREF's are like candy. I need to have the building outlines and interior walls all on the same drawing without any XREF's. We have an X shaped building where each of the legs of the X is identical to the others. So they drew one section and XREF'd it - FOUR TIMES rather than using blocks.

I willingly admit that there may be reason to use XREF's and I may not be smart enough to understand what they are trying to do here, but when AutoCAD throws a note that says :

"Breaking circular reference from "filename1" to "current drawing".

(filename1 changed to protect the guilty) Someone has gone a little overboard.

So what I want to do is save the file without all the XREF's - I'd like all the blocks and layers to be intact and useable - but I'm getting close to doing a JPGOUT on this thing and using it as a background!

Can anybody help me out here?

The quickest way is to type -ExportToAutocad at the command line. Make sure the "Bind" option is set to Yes, and it'll export the entire file blocking each XREF. This just keeps from having to Bind each individual XREF all the time. Hopefully this is the solution that you're looking for. :)

Styk,

Thank you VERY MUCH. I had started rebuilding the drawings by starting at the bottom and Wblocking them, reinserting the XREF's as blocks and then saving the new drawings. This saved me several steps and possible points for error. I still needed to create one intermediate temp drawing due to the multiple levels of XREF's, but the task was much more manageable.

Now all I have to do is document this process and command so I can find it again next project from this Architect.

Thanks again.

No prob. It's definitely a good tool but a custom Lisp program would be much better if you could find one out there floating around. It's what I use from time to time. :)
