novice at mates

Hi All

Any idea how I get these two parts to mate so that the tube lines up with the ellipse in the plate

The tube was created as an extruded thin feature and a cut at 40 degs across the top

Or is my method of producing this all wrong :?

Thanks

My quick thoughts....

- using simple grip editing, move the tube by using the grip at the upper edge of the ellipse on the tube. Move it until it matches the same point on the plate. the rotation of the parts may not still be correct

- draw a construction line (command XL) across the major axis of each ellipes. this will give you some points of reference to help you visualize

- measure some angles

- determine if you would be best to rotate in the plane of the plate first, or if you need to get the plane of the ellipse on the tube rotated to the plane of the plate first

- then use the command rotate3d to do this. You may find you need some further construction lines as rotate3d will need a line about which to rotate

- chances are you will rotate it + for - the first time :x, undo and change the sign of your angle

I can visualize this procedure. My spatial relations/reasoning is my strong point. Getting all the commands to move things the way I want them to go is what gets in my way!

Good luck.

But then I am using 2002. By now, there could be better methods to do this....

Model in position and use three mates to the xy, xz and yz planes.
