Question about scaling

hi, Using ACad Mechanical 2008 here, just wondering if there is anyone that can briefly explain to me the commands or etc that I need to use in order to draw very small parts, such like RECTANG .0995 WLish but so that they can be seen as much bigger lik 10x without channging DIMLINEAR dimensions. Basically want to draw small things bigger, without changing dimensions, so even tho the part is 10x bigger, when i DIMLINEAR or origin dimension the part, it still displays its true dimensions! Thanks. I notice if I try to scale the part up after I've already completed the drawing, the dimensions scale up too and defeat the whole purpose. there must be an easy way to correct this?

Draw your object to true size, like your rectangle at .0995, in model space. Move into paper space and draw an 8.5 x 11 inch rectangle to represent an A size sheet. Now create a viewport inside this border. Set the scale of the viewport to show your small part. Now add dimensions.

I am assuming you know the basics of this stuff, if I didn't provide enough detail write back for more.

Yes there is that way but it seems a bit busy workish for something that if i remember correctly was very simple.. I remember from training being able to scale up a part after you've drawn it, and not have the dimensions change to match the new scale at all. Very simple 1 2 3 way of doing it.. Isnt there a command for this? Been press F1 and skimming help and come close, but cant find it as of yet

scaling up what you've drawn is something that used to happen before the modelspace/paperspace environment was created, and is actually the messier way of doing things, as anybody attempting to edit the drawing at a later date is likely to run into problems

Honestly, give the method described above a go, and you'll like it when you've tried it! It IS easier!

I suppose you could trick AutoCAD into doing it if you were going to scale up all your details by the same factor. Example: 2X.

DimStyle > Modify > Primary units tab. Look under Measurement Scale / Scale Factor. Change it from the default of 1.0 to .5 then click OK and exit out.

I pity the poor person who has to edit the drawing down the line though.

Utilize model space / layouts the way they are meant to be used and make life easier not only for yourself but for the person who comes after you.

Everything is simple when someone has taken the time to set things up in an efficient manner, which is probably why it seemed easy back then. We used to have a shed load of dimstyles for different scales when we still put everything in modelspace.

After using paperspace/layouts for the last 6 years, to expect anyone to do it the old way would seem very draconian.

So, as all above have advised, I too would suggest you take your chances with layouts. You won't regret the decision.
