OneLove Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I'm not a big hardware guy, and I've never built my own computer before. But I've recently been using Inventor, and I think it could play a role in my future career. And I need a PC that will be able to run Inventor, so I decided to build my own. I have spent some time creating a list of things to buy. Since I have very little knowledge about hardware, I have a few questions. Is the graphics card I chose adequate for Inventor? What about the processor? Also, my budget is around $1,000. Quote
ReMark Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Looks fine to me with one minor exception. I'd go with something other than Win7 Home. Might I suggest Win7 Ultimate? Quote

ReMark Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 You are a professional or at least expect to be one right? If you answered "yes" to that question then you'll get the Ultimate version. Quote
OneLove Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 You are a professional or at least expect to be one right? If you answered "yes" to that question then you'll get the Ultimate version. I'll most likely just purchase the Home version. I don't see the point in getting the Ultimate version. On another note, I have a question about the graphics card. On the Autodesk website, it says that a "Direct3D10, Direct3D 9 or OpenGL capable graphics card" is required to run Inventor. I'm not sure if the graphics card that I chose in the above shopping list in my original post is a Direct3D10, Direct3D 9 or OpenGL capable graphics card. Do you know if it will work with CAD and Inventor? Quote
ReMark Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Just look up the specs and it will tell you. I'd also cross-check the card with those AutoDesk recommends. You can do that at the AutoDesk website. Quote
ReMark Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 AutoDesk graphics card recommendations for Inventor. Start with this link: http://www.inventor-certified.com/graphics/ By the way, if you are going to be designing complex assemblies I would recommend going with Win7 Pro at the very least. Here is a comparison chart for you: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare Quote
ReMark Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Re: your graphics card and OpenGL/2 and/or DirectX support. From the manufacturer there is this... Optimized for Windows 7, Windows Vista™ with comprehensive DirectX® 11.0 10.1, 10.0 and DirectX® 9 support. It doesn't appear as though OpenGL/2 is supported. No big loss. AutoDesk said that with the introduction of 2010 it was moving more in the direction of DirectX. Quote
OneLove Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 Thanks for the help. I don't think I'll be doing any complex assemblies any time soon. I just recently started using Inventor, and the only drawings I've done so far have been single part drawings. I'm just now starting to introduce myself into multi-part assemblies. I think I might get Win 7 Pro. Quote
