Laptop for 3D-plant / Inventor

Hey Folks!

I (or rather my collegue, you know, the one with the Boat) have just gotten a spec on a laptop that They claim will be able to run Inventor and 3D Plant like a charm - I just wanted to run this buy you fine folks over here and see what you think - is it as good as the retailer claims?

Base Unit: Hp IDS Dual 8740w Base NB PC

OS: Win7 64bit

Processor: Intel Core i7 620M 8740w Processor

Display: 17.0 WUXGA WVA f/CAM 8740w Display

Memory: 8GB 1333DDR3 2DM 8740w Memory

Internal Storage: 500G 7200RPM 8740w Hard Drive

Graphics: nVidia FX 2800M 1GB 8740w Graphics

On the surface I'd say the specs look pretty good. I'm going to have to check out one thing and get back to you though.

Any reason why he didn't look at a quad-core? Probably a lot more money right?

I only bring it up because I suspect the user will have to get a good three years use out of the laptop before he gets a new one. The way software is going I think he should seriously consider a quad-core.

Umm, Core i7s are quad cores but with hyper threading as well so you have 8 processing threads in total.

Core i7 620M is listed here as 2-core'd. I wonder though, in this list, the 4-core'd processors don't have a tick under Intel HD-Graphics, why not? That sounds like something one would want to have?

We did get a spec for a second computer, a sort of medium version that was recommended for larger Inventor models, specs as follows:

Base Unit: Hp IDS Dualcore 8540w Base NB PC

OS: Win7 PRO 64bit

Processor: Intel Core i7 620M 8540w Processor

Display: 15.6 FHD for Camera 8540w Display

Memory: 8GB 1333DDR3 2DM 8540w Memory

Internal Storage: 500G 7200RPM 8540w Hard Drive

Graphics: nVidia QuadroFX 1800M SATA 2.5 8540w Graphics

At the risk of sounding too pushy might I also suggest going with Win7 Ultimate? Pro is good. Ultimate would be best.

I really didn't see much difference between Pro and Ultimate, but since the price difference was only about $20, I went with Ultimate when I upgraded. I mean, after all, it's only another $20.

A matrix chart for Win7 can be found at the Microsoft website. It will tell you what features are available with each edition.
