designerstuart Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 an xref can be either overlay or attachement. what do you need to know? what is the problem? more info please! Quote
mateen Posted November 25, 2010 Author Posted November 25, 2010 i use only xref command in our office. but i wanna know what is the purpose of overlay command. why do we use it? Quote
Cad64 Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 The Autocad Help files explains this pretty well, but here's another explanation: If you Xref drawing "A" into drawing "B" as an Attachment and then Xref drawing "B" into drawing "C", Xref "A" will carry over into drawing "C". This creates Nested Xref's, which I do not like. If you Xref drawing "A" into drawing "B" as an Overlay and then Xref drawing "B" into drawing "C", Xref "A" will not carry over into drawing "C". This is the method that I prefer. Quote
designerstuart Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 autocad help will tell you all about it. but to overlay IS to xref. overlay avoids binding the xrefs together whereas attach does not. so if you attach dwg1 to dwg2, then open dwg3 and xref (attach) dwg2 to it, dwg1 will come through as well, because it is attached to dwg2. overlay avoids this, and as a result i very rarely use attach. circular references are a common result, and annoying.
