View Full Version : Layers won't delete?

I have just upgraded to Civil 3d 2011. I am trying to make a new template and I brought in an old rawing to do so. Currently I am trying to delete all the layers on the manager except 0. They all seem to show they have objects in that layer even though I have purged all items and zoomed out deleteing everything multiple times. I checked the xreferenced items and I have none shown. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks a lot for any help.

so the drawing has no entities in it at all? how many of these layers are there?
i think some layers are related to styles and 'other' things than linework etc.
defpoints, like layer0, cannot be deleted.

If the layers are part of one of Civil 3D's styles they won't delete/purge.

COrrest no entities at all. 87 layers.

Could 87 layers be part of the styles? How do I check that? Laydel didn't help either.

The only other references I know about in Civil 3D are for default object creation. Go to Toolspace, Settings tab, right-click on drawing name, select Drawing Settings, and select Object Layers tab. If any of those layers are not 0, and you don't want object types to go on layers other than 0, then set them to 0.

As for styles, typically you want to look at the Display tab. Every object in, say, a profile view can go on a specific layer. They default to 0, but if you're working with an existing drawing there's no telling.

Your best bet, if you can't find those 87 layers, may be to start from scratch. That way you get the default settings. If you've developed styles you want to keep, you can drag them from the old drawing into the new one.

Perhaps there are some block references that still reside within the drawing?

*IF* so, do a PURGE, and select 'Purge All' - Be sure to have the 'Purge nested items' box checked.

Hope this helps!

I tried purge and it didn't work. I didn't know about the Drawing Settings, but that still didn't work. Odd... Maybe since I brought the layers in from an old drawing when making the template?

LAYDEL will delete the layer no matter what state it is in....
can you post a drawing with all the layers??

I rebooted my pc and cad and was able to use laydel again. That is working. Thanks a lot :).

Go to toolspace, settings, click on say surface, surface styles, you can now see what surface styles are in the drawing and what layers are to be assigned for objects even if you have not done anything. You will find your undeletable layers there (new word undeletable)

we start with around 500 layers (all surveys codes to layers) a purge etc = 100 layers

EEE Gads, man! Thats a lot of undeletables...
