ThrashMetal Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 hey everyone, can anyone instruct me on how to create a roof on 3d max..hows the easiest way to do it?.. thanks in advance. Quote
ThrashMetal Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 i meant the roof like the material, corrugated type, tegula roofing type..thanks.. Quote
Cad64 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 You said corrugated metal roof, but then you said tegula roofing, so I'm not sure what you're after? I'm assuming that you're talking about a clay tile roof. I've tried a few different ways, but in my opinion, the best way is to just model it. There used to be a good tutorial online, but after quite a bit of searching, I have come up empty. I don't know what happened to it? I have a pdf that covers this topic pretty well, but it's far too large to post here in the forum, (17mb). So if you want it, follow the link in my signature, go to the "Contact" page on my website, send me an email and I will send you the pdf. Quote
ThrashMetal Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 wow thanks cad..im actually after both, if its possible, in case I need one more than the other, i had modeled it but im just getting tired of creating the same thing over and over again for every roof of every different residential and commercial building projects that comes, i thought everyone modeled it but one friend said it can be achieved by displacement, unfortunately I cant reach him anymore..lol. thanks a lot again cad64. Cad64 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I sent you the pdf. I hope it helps. Here's another tutorial that might be useful: http://www.cgarchitect.com/resources/tutorials/smoke3d/tutorial4.asp You could try displacement, but displacement can really substantially increase render time. And if you don't do it right it can really look terrible. Quote
Raudel Solis Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 displacement? i dont see how that could work but just fyi you need an elevation map to use the displacement map and little errors in colors are extremely noticeable, black and white only, can be done in photshop if your skilled Quote
ThrashMetal Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments, i tried all and it works, even displacing it, the easiest way i noticed is displacing it by using vraydisplacement mode but its only good for tiled roofs/shingles. i got a plug- in called batzal roof creator for 3ds max and its the most fun i had creating roofs, but comes with a price, its heavy, the one i created generated 1,700,000 polygons, which means you have to proxy it, but eventually the render time is increased tremendously.
