I have been grouping specific things in one file so I can copy and paste them into new files as necessary. I just realized that when I paste them into another file the group seems to be broken. Any way to change that?

Save these groups of objects into their own individual files and then insert them into your drawings as blocks. Groups are only relevant in the drawing where they are created. If you copy and paste them from one drawing to another they lose their grouping.

From the Autocad Help files:

Unlike blocks, groups cannot be shared with other drawings.

You could "Paste as Block", at least that would maintain all in one.

if you use ctrl+c and ctrl+v, try ctrl+shift+v (paste as block)

but cad64 is right, best way to do what you're doing is to insert your reference file as a block.

(if you just want the definition rather than the elements, you can even hit excape before selecting the insertion point. the ref drawing is 'remembered' in your host drawing, without the objects appearing)
