RCSLA Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Using AutoCad 2010. This has happened a number of times: - I successfully copy a layer (using Design Center) from one drawing to another but if I later turn that layer off and then turn it back on - It's gone. (The layer is there, but the contents are gone.) It's gotten quite frustrating. :xHow do I prevent that from happening? Is it just hidden and I can't find it. Quote
nestly Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 When you use Design Center to bring layers into a drawing you're only bringing in the layer (and layer settings), not the objects on the layer. Quote
RCSLA Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 Thanks nestly for your response. Your right, and I did first bring in the layers and then successfully copied the content. But the content was lost after turning the layer off then back on. I've redone the copy a number of times, again successfully, but the turning off then back on of the layer looses the content. Quote
nestly Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I suspect when you're copying the objects, they're not being pasted to the layer you expect. How are you coping the objects between drawings? The clipboard? Quote
RCSLA Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 With both drawings open I highlight and "copy with base point" from source dwg, then paste in destination dwg. The paste works, and as long as I never turn that layer off it stays there, but again if I turn the layer off the content is gone when I turn it back on. Quote
ReMark Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I've got 2010 loaded on my machine as well. I'll have to give that a try and see what happens. Don't recall having any problems when I used 2010 however so I'm not expecting any now. All updates for 2010 loaded? Quote

The paste works, and as long as I never turn that layer off it stays there, but again if I turn the layer off the content is gone when I turn it back on. The objects you're copying do not necessarily get pasted onto the current layer, they'll retain their original layer from the source drawing. To the end, it's not even necessary to bring the layer in first, as it will automatically be added to the target drawing when the objects are pasted. Before you turn the layer off, select the freshly pasted objects and confirm what layer they're on. My guess is that they're getting pasted to a layer that's either OFF or Frozen and they're "disappearing" when the display is refreshed. Can you post a sample drawing? Quote
