how to label contours?

i created my first surface with a simple point file, edited the tin, and the resulting contours look great, but i cannot figure out how to label the contours. that is, show the elevation the contours represent.

i did find : toolspace-settings-contour, which permits editing the labels themselves, but i cannot get them to appear.
