Okay I can do it on anyting with straight lines, but how do you put a 3D face on something that isn't? Circles etc.

You can't, a face has to have 3 or 4 vertices. You could change the circle to a region, does that help?

Best way I guess is to make a small offset of your shape (circle, ellipse etc). Extrude these to the height you want then subtract one from the other. It's not a 'face' as such but with a minimum wall thickness, will give the impression of one. You could use 'edgesurface' but this leaves a nasty meshed appearance, which I personally don't like, but of you're rendering the final image this will go, if you're not, it won't
