Cut a section out of a 3D object

Hello all,

If I have a simple rectangular shaped 3D part and I want to cut the ends off at exact dimensions, what would be the simplest way?

If I draw a Polyline from the end of the part angled down to the bottom at my specified dimensions, can't I just extrude that line through the rectangle and trim it?

For some reason I can't make this simple task work. Please help???
