    Is this a gaming-related inquiry?

For what use is this alpha map be created?

I'm using them to add vehicles to my architectural renderings.

Have you tried searching the Internet for "GIMP tutorials"?

What software do you use for your renderings?

    I haven't, but I will. I'm using AutoCad Architecture '09.

Try searching here for "free" 3D models. Maybe you can save yourself some time and trouble.

You do it the same way you would do it in Photoshop. Gimp has all the same tools, they're just in different locations. If you find a good Photoshop tutorial on Alpha Maps, you can apply the same technique to Gimp.
