Can someone please tell me the difference between a '3d solid' and a 'mass element' - or point me to a reference?:oops:

Well, that's strange. Generally someone will have a go at an answer even if not definitive.

Can no-one point me to an answer?

Or I will ask the question in another way: why in 'Architecture' (maybe in other flavours as well - I don't know) are there '3d solids' and 'mass elements'?

Anyone help?

The link contains the definition of a mass element. That's half of your first question in a way. Find the definition of a 3D solid, compare the two and you'll have the full answer.
