Extruding in an added plane?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to SolidWorks and have basically taught myself everything thus far. I'm drawing a bioreactor for the lab I work in at school and I'm stuck on one part. Im sorry if this is a stupid question, but if you add a plane to a part, is there a way to extrude from that plane? The base of the bioreactor is a cylinder, and I need to put a hole in the side of the cylinder. I added a plane that is tangent to the cylinder and drew a circle with the dimensions I want, but when I hit extruded cut, I get an error message saying I need to specify the direction of extrusion, which I do not know how to do. Has anyone experienced this before?
