When you think about this pattern as a long path or corridor and the horizontal joints follow the length, the short staggered ones give you kind of natural random pattern of laid stones; it's not as bad as you described and has some kind of regularity. I don't need grout lines as this is a representation of the tiles on a floor finishes plan. Just when I thought it could not be done!! Yeah!
