Commands are repeating infinitely within the command line.

I'm having an intermittent problem with Vanilla AutoCAD 2011. Every so often when I start a command it will loop in the command line as the extract I have put in the command line.

Usually escaping and pressing F1 to bring up help will stop it but occasionally like now restarting the programme is the only cure. It is annoying and time consuming rather than destructive but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this or had anyway of fixing it? I have just noticed that if I start the line command it tries to draw a line where ever the cursor is but won't let you drop a second point on it. Nothing else is affected on the computer that I have noticed so far so it probably isn't hardware.

If it helps I mainly use key commands and I have amended my alias's.

** Update **

I just found closing and re-opening the drawing works. We save as 2010 format (the latest on this release) and it works fine now. I do have info from the planners on this drawing but the Autodesk tick is on the page.

I saw this behavior a long time ago but can't remember what the solution was. Your update makes it sound like it was just happening in one particular file and it is not happening anymore after a "save as". Am I understanding correctly?

It happens intermittently but in many different files. Its been bothering me more and more, trouble is it normally fills up the entire command line before I notice it so I have never been able to see if it is one particular command that sets it off!

I didn't try save as, I saved, closed and then re-opened.

Nope. I use a trackball due to RSI and everyone gets confused by it so I also have a mouse connected, could there be an occasional conflict?

I do daily cleans and emptying of my keyboard to make sure the dust bunnies and crumbs don't affect the keyboard (or go green!) I'll see if IT have a spare keyboard, but I got bored of the pain from using a mouse and repeatedly asking for a trackball so I went and bought my own to use, so no spares there :(

Well it wasn't the mouse. I disconencted that and it all went haywire about half an hour ago. It doesn't seem to be a key stuck it just goes into a loop after a command has started.

If you can work for a while without the trackball, eliminate that and see if it happens again.

I'm still drawing a blank as to if I was able to fix this when it happened to me or if it just went away. When/if it happens again write down the last few things you did. Also, do all of those regular things like restarting computer, clearing temp folders, doing a defrag, etc.

When it happens in your offset example, does it actually create off those offsets or is just repeatedly asking for the second point?

I can't work for more than 20 minutes with a mouse without pain and I've already done something to my shoulder this week. I'll bring the one from home in see if that helps.

I checked this time on the F2 pop up. I had been working normally, then I pressed D for my distance command (alias edited) when it started. It doesn't create or let you select distance or side for the offset, but when I tried to distract it with the line command although it didn't show anything at the time it did draw the lines when I reloaded the drawing.

Thanks for your time Rob!

No problem, Glen.

I'm thinking it's not the trackball but it is worth eliminating it as the cause. What was the most recent change you did to AutoCAD? Did you start using a new lisp? Make some other sort of customization? If anything recent, then undo it. You could try using a fresh profile to see if yours is corrupt. Make sure to export your current one so you can reset it if it is not the problem.

Repairing your isntallation may be in line but you should probably eliminate anything that you can think of before doing that.

Cheers, Rob.

I'll give that a try. Might have to research the profile bit as I've never done anything with that.

I'm not a massive user of LISPs. There isn't anyone here who can teach me so I've just tried to glean what I can from the net. So far I just save the .lsp files to the required folder in programme files and then put them in the startup suite if they are useful. I'll remove the last one I put in to see if that helps.

Bluetooth? I've had my Bluetooth keyboard go ape snot nuts at times. It has even filled up the forum post window repeating a character at the speed of sound. Sometimes Esc stops it and sometimes I have to flip it's I/O switch to O. Luckily Autocad doesn't even try to read those extraneous commands until it sees an 'ENTER'. Otherwise it might go off into neverland trying to do it all.

Hi Dana. Nope, I've got a wired keyboard. In fact all of the nice stuff I have at my desk was bought by me! They didn't even bat an eye lid when I showed them the letter from the consultant saying I had RSI symptoms, that's why I wound up buying a trackball then another one to replace that when I wore it out. I'm going to borrow another keyboard and see if the problem reoccurs then.
