Anyone tell me why when I purge a drawing I always get *U17, *U19 or U(inset number here) blocks that require purging?

I assume they are linked to dynamic blocks or something?

They're called anonymous blocks and are created by Autocad for various things, including as you guessed, dynamic blocks. Dimensions are another example. You may also come across *E, *X, *D, *A anonymous blocks as well.
