Jim Bowman
My organization is upgrading to AutoCAD 2014. We have a huge inventory of older drawings. It has been my experience new versions of AutoCAD can always read older drawing files. Recently someone suggested 2014, and perhaps other newer versions, "only accepts three versions back for compatibility issues". Do we need to "update" our older drawings for the new version of AutoCAD to read them? Edited July 29, 2014 by Jim Bowman
RobDraw
Short answer is, "No." but I have to type more than that in order to post.
rkmcswain
...and a longer answer is the same... you can always open an older drawing. There is a link on this page to an AutoCAD 2.18 version DWG file (circa 1985) that opens just fine in 2015. Problems can crop up when trying to go the other way though. Saving new features down to older versions can introduce problems.
