mcshaun
I need to gather some geometry information on gearing. Quite a lengthy project has to be drawn in Solidworks, but it all has to be geometrically correct. It is unclear as to whether it is for CNC or not. Does anyone here have a machinests handibook that I can borrow or maybe one for sale? There are three other Draftsmen here besides myself and no one has access to one. My Library is unable to get a copy that we can keep for awhile. I would appreciate any help I can get on this . Thanks, Mc Shaun
nukecad
Gear design can be a pretty specialised area of engineering, there are many types of gears and gear profiles. I have found this site to be a good online reference for engineering data, it is a UK site but engineering formula are engineering formula. I've linked to the spur gear pages you should be able to navigate from there to find what you need- http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/Drive/Gears.html
chubarka
You may very well be better off heeding nukecad's words than looking for a Machinery's Handbook, as they are getting more rare by the day, and to purchase them, I've seen prices as low as $113.00 and as high as $179.00 on Amazon. I do have it in the PDF format if you want it, however you will probably have to have it printed by a pro printing service, as to print only the chapters that you would need is a little tricky, and to have all 1400 pages printed would be very expensive and bulky. I would have to put it on my Cloud for you to download, as it is 35.3 MB in size and too large for email. You would also need an FTP program to access my Cloud, if you don't have one, you can download one for free at www.ftpcommander.com, small program, takes about 30 seconds to download and install it, and just about that long to learn it, even for a non-geek like myself. If you decide you want it, email me at lotec@cox.net and I will send you a user name and password to log into my Cloud. Good luck, Chubarka
shift1313
Are you designing the gears or just an assembly with gears? You can likely download gears from mcmaster carr. I wouldn't design a gear without knowing how its manufactured as that can change a lot. What types of gears?
mcshaun
The project includes bevel gears, helical gears and worm gears. The worm gears are probably going to be metric. It hasn't been established yet as to whether we are going to use American Standard geometry with the dimensions converted to metric or if the European worm gear is of different geometry or not. Thanks for your offer to download the Machinests Handibook, mr chubacka. We do not have email clients on office computers so I will email you from my home computer. welldriller
Do not know if this will help or not but you might check out http://www.codecogs.com/library/engineering/theory_of_machines/the-geometry-of-gears.php
