creating a surface from lots of points for 3D mapping

Recommended Posts

Picked up this thread from a long time ago.

We are now working with 3D mapping (or digital terrain model - DTM - files).

DTM files that we have are in DXF/DWG format and consist of a 1km square tile that is made up of 3D points at every 5m.

We are currently using "Site Topo" to be able to create either a triangulation model or a 3D surface model from these 3D points.

It did get me wondering, as "Site Topo" does these tasks effortlessly, why can't AutoCAD do it?

We even have Civils 3D and that can't convert these DTM tiles in to anything useful.

(Civils 3D fails to recognize the 3D points)

Anyways, given the history of this particular question, have people found an easy way within AutoCAD to do the above? (any recent plugins that I could be made aware of?)

Cheers.

You added your question to a thread in the Rhino Forum, but it appears you are asking about AutoCAD. [/url]

Apologies, my bad.

Thanks for the new thread.

"CAD Tools" , interesting, they list quite a few surface tools on the advert.

I'll attempt to get this installed (if our firewall will allow).

Civils 3D fails to recognize the 3D points

This does not make any sense, it sounds more like the "points" are maybe blocks.

You can create a surface with points in a couple of different ways, import a point file or import Autocad entities which includes points, lines, 3d faces.

Post a sample dwg

It took less than 1 minute to contour the points in CIV3d

You must have a template set up with contour styles etc, I opened your dwg copied and pasted the points to our template.

Opened tool space

Autocad objects

selected all points.

All done contours appeared.

Thanks for that reply.

Seems like we had an incomplete install of the software on the machines.

Some commands and templates were unavailable.

After now realizing this as part of your reply, we are now able to perform what we need to.

Cheers ! :)
