Editing sw file as dwg

Our customer is asking us to do some project and they provide SW file.

Question is: how usable it will be for us when we use only Autocad to do detail. If this file be converted from SW to dwg how good it is for us to do modification, show different view, use converted dimension( dimension will be dimension or like exploded dimension?). Solid model from SW will still be solid in Autocad?

I did some conversion long, very long time ago and I am not so sure about it.

Please clear it for me.

Assuming you know how to use solids in AutoCAD - have them Save As type ACIS (*.sat) and be sure to set Options to ACIS v7.

Then on your end issue the ACISIN command and you are on your way.

File have to be saved as *.sat. Got it. Version of file must be compatible with Autocad we use ( 2007) or we got to ask to save in lower version?

Is same situation with Inventor?

It is a way to convert native SW file without SolidWorks?

Autodesk products stopped using ACIS (*.sat) at version 7 so Options in any program that save ACIS must be set at version 7 (ACIS is now up to something like v18. )

Autodesk Inventor will open native SolidWorks *.sldprt and *.sldasm and can save as dwg.

AutoCAD and free Inventor Fusion (http://labs.autodesk.com) will open *.sat files. Fusion will also open *.stp files. Fusion can be used to edit solids and save as dwg.

Free DWG TrueView can be used to convert dwg versions from later versions to earlier versions.

I don't have SWx on this machine, but as I recall when Save As Copy ACIS (*.sat) there is an Options button or something to that effect. Simply look around a bit and you should find it.

File>Save As. In the file type drop down choose ACIS(*.sat) and there will be an Options button. This will bring you to another window that will let you choose the version, units and output as Solid/Surface or 3d curves.

I think I just realized my problem. I'm using solid works eDrawings and it doesn't have all the capabilities that the full solidworks software has. Thanks for the help though I'll just have to get the actual software and than convert my model.
