How does 3D CAD differ to 3D design in media/games?

Hi,

I went to school for 3-D animation/effects and we used Maya. I'm curious to know what the difference between the CAD field and the software used, to the Media field and the software used there. I was thinking of doing a second major in 3-D CAD design but I cannot find any info about the field other then software tutorials. Can someone please explain the industry(s) of 3D CAD, the negatives and positives behind it and if possible how it contrast with doing 3-D in media (ed; broadcast, movies video games)? - thanks

Ello,

I may be able to help with this one a bit, but I will have to post back properly tonight after work as I need to speak to my husband. :)

He is moving in to CGMA after being a traditional sculptor and uses programs such as Maya and Z-Brush. Where as I am based in 3D Design, mainly using AutoCAD but I have played with other programs like Revit, Vectorworks, Sketch-up ect…

Hopefully we can try and cover both sides and come up with some info for you, or at least get the ball rolling. :)

Awesome, As of right now I am a little lost in what I should do, I love 3D modeling and tech, but for me it necessarily doesn't have to be 3D modeling for media (i'm not a fan of how the media industries are run).
