richard3009 Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Autocad 2008LT I have a file which contains 50 drawings on 150 layers 3 layers per drg. Ie Border/Lines/Text for each drg I wish to export each complete drg to its own individual autocad file, I can do this by switching on the required levels for each drg. then copying and pasting to a new file in each instance. Is it possible in Autocad to paste to a new Autocad file; without first creating the empty Autocad file to paste into? IE it creates the file as you paste and allocates it a filename. Any other tips on making short work of this task would be much welcomed, thank you. Quote
Dave^ Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 File>save as... then delete the bits you don't need in that particular drawing..... that's how i'd do it, but sounds like it could be very time consuming.... Quote

richard3009 Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 If i do a file save as, I would then have to delete 147 layers from the new file, or is there a way to "save as" and only save the three required layers Quote
Tiger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I just checked the Export command, and you can export to a DWG - I haven't tried this through completely but if you just have one of the layers On, run the Export command and you can then select everything on screen and get it saved to a new DWG. Quote

richard3009 Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Ok Im getting somewhere near, export seems to be the way to go, do i need to use the select command on the screen to export what is displayed, and will it be deleted from the original file? Quote
Tiger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 It will not be deleted from the original file. If you have the layers that you don't want to export Frozen instead of Off'd - you can use ctrl+A to select everything. EDIT. the italics are incorrect, it is in fact removed. Quote
richard3009 Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Can you just run me through the export command it prompts me for a block or whole drg. Quote
Tiger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Command: exportEnter name of existing block or [= (block=output file)/* (whole drawing)] : [enter] Specify insertion base point:[click a point] Select objects: Specify opposite corner: [ctrl+a] Select objects: [enter] This is how my prompts looked like. When I just hit enter at the Define New Block prompt I could select objects. Quote
Tiger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 RETRACKTION - I said earlier that objects that you Export are not removed from the file, this is incorrect! It is in fact removed entirely. Just so you know. Quote
richard3009 Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 yes I select basepoint hit enter select objects hit enter again, it successfully creates a new file, BUT it also literally exports the entities displayed, ie they are deleted from the original file, edit undo sorts this but its not ideal Quote
Tiger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 yeah, I was mistaken when I said that Export does not delete the objects. WBLOCK does the same yes, try that out - that I know does not delete the objects  Quote
richard3009 Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Thank you chaps WBLOCK gives me the required result. Quote
RyanAtNelco Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 i think wblock actually used to delete the objects (or at least there was some variable i was unaware of). I used to have to use the oops command to get the block back in the drawing. The people at autodesk seem to have taken care of this however. Quote
jfg Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 It still can. Its an option, just the same as when you create a block with the BLOCK command. Quote
Tiger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Ah yes. Good thing it defaults to Convert to Block then Quote
