Hi all, new to the forum and loving all the knowledge. I was looking around for an answer to my dilemma and apologize if the solution is on here already. Anyway, I am modeling a handle for a project and I used standard modeling commands (extrude polylines, subtract, union, revolve, etc.) and the 2D wireframe looks right, but when I do the 3D hidden it gets all out of whack. CAn anyone shed some light on why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

Look into FACETRES and VIEWRES for control of smoothness. -David

Thanks for the tip, David. I adjusted both settings but it does not seem to change anything. Am I missing something?

Have you tried typing "REGEN" in the command line?

Posted

Yes I tried REGEN and no real difference. Also, I adjusted the FACETRES and then redid the model and I still get the jagged lines. I'd attach the file, but I can't get it below 500kb

Could it be a graphics performance issue (see Performance Tuner) or a graphics card issue?

Is DISPSILH set to 1?

What are the values you have for VIEWRES, FACETRES and SHADEMODE? -David

The DISPSILH was set to 0, but no difference when I changed it to 1. VIEWRES is 20000, FACETRES 10, and SHADEMODE is currently at 3DHidden, though I tried different SHADEMODE settings.

CADMASTER1128 I mailed you a copy of the dwg, any luck with it?

ReMark, it could be a graphics performance issue. I was not aware of the 3DCONFIG command. I just checked it out only to discover that 'Smooth line display" is not available. This surprised me as I bought this computer less than 6 months ago assuming it would have no problem with AutoCAD. It's an HP m9510f with a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS card.

Below is the info from the Tune Log:

Driver : 7.15.0011.7578

Your machine contains a 3D Device that is not certified.

As more graphics cards and 3D display drivers are tested, they are added to a list on the Autodesk website.

You can check for updates and download the latest certification list at any time. Run the 3DCONFIG command and click the Check for Updates button.

Current application driver: direct3d9.hdi

Current Effect Status:

----------------------

Enhanced 3D Performance: Available and on

Smooth line display: Not available

Gooch shader: Available and using hardware

Per-pixel lighting: Available and on

Full-shadow display: Available and on

Texture compression: Available and off

Available application drivers and effect support:

-------------------------------------------------

Software driver

Effect support:

Enhanced 3D Performance: Not applicable

Smooth line display: Not applicable

Gooch shader: Software emulation only

Per-pixel lighting: Not applicable

Full-shadow display: Not applicable

Texture compression: Not applicable

Direct3D driver: Not Certified

Effect support:

Enhanced 3D Performance: Available

Smooth line display: Not applicable

Gooch shader: Available

Per-pixel lighting: Available

Full-shadow display: Available

Texture compression: Available

Enhanced 2D Performance: Available

So what I'm guessing is going on is I don't have the latest 3D driver for this particular card. However when check for updates through the Performance Tuner, I get a "Failed to update...check your network connection" window even though I am connected to the net.

Any ideas?

OK, so I downloaded the latest AutoCAD 2009 update (v.3) and now my Performance Tuner says it is up to date. However when I view the Tuner Log, it still says last updated on 2/24/2009 (which, now that I think about it, was before the computer was ever used). And Smooth line display is still not available in Manual Tune.

Now I'm wondering if I'm just missing the command to update the 3DCONFIG, or if I'm all updated and my card just isn't supported.

Well...after making that last post I opened 3DCONFIG again to see what I could be missing. I tried turning off 'Enable hardware acceleration' and to my surprise the handle is smooth!

I'm not sure what turning that off did exactly, but I really appreciate the help on this.

I think that by turning off hardware acceleration you put the emphasis back on the software to smooth out the display. Glad to hear you have a solution.
