I received a file from the site surveyor and when I go to copy the topo lines that are there from one drawing to another they won't copy. Even withing the drawing they wont copy. When I click on them, in my properties window it says that it is an ACAD_PROXY_ENTITY. I am guessing that they used a different software than what I am using (Arch Desktop 2006). Is there anyway that I can transfer the lines?

Can you ask them what program they used? If it's a autocad vertical you can download an Object Enabler from Autodesks homepage, which will let you see these objects correctly and you should be able to copy them and move them around.

If not, it's a bit trickier...can't think of a solution off the top of my head, by try a Search on this site, I know this has been asked before.

Well I figured out a solution. If I exploded the linetype it would create a series of little polylines. I then used the quick select and selected all objects on that layer. Once I they were all selected I then created a wblock and inserted that in my other drawing. Worked like a charm :D. Ill have to check out what you said tho too. Thanks.

Do you know off hand if an enabler could allow me to open objects created in Civil3D 2009 in Civil3D 2008?

Our office uses both 3D2009 & 3D2008, of which I have the least recent version, making almost every drafting exercise a labouring procedure.

No, an enabler won't help.

You need to do a SaveAs, from the 2009 version, and save to an earlier format. If you are working in an office with multiple versions, then everyone should be saving their work in a format that the lowest version can read.

Ok thanks, I was hoping there was going to be a quick fix. I wish everyone would save as 2008, would make my life a lot easier.

You can sneak up to their computers when they're off for lunch or something and change the default Save As - go Tools > Options > Open and SAve tab and change the Save As to AutoCAD 2008. And they'll never know

I know this is an old thread, but had to say thanks to CAD Tutor and this thread I figured the ACAD_PROXY_ENTITY out. It was saved in a future version, and I could view these entities in the DWG True View 2011.

Once I did a drawing convert to view in my Autocad 2008 I couldn't see any of these objects. Once I did a "qselect" (command) I was able to find all of these invisible ACAD_PROXY_ENTITIES and explode them per this thread and now I can see them thanks!!
