I created a solid, and tried to do a shell command on it about 5 or so times, just seeing if i could get some kind of result.

Now I saved it and went home yesterday, frustrated, hoping I would be able to think of somehow to do it today.

However, something has happened to the solid..

If i try and edit ANY of the features, I get this "object has no volume" error, and if i delete a feature, the solid disappears completely. Also, when I'm tyring to use in assembly mode, any time I try to place a constraint on it, i get a 'general system error"...

Any Ideas? did trying shell to much on it corrupt the file or semething?

Most likely lost coordinate system origin. Zip and attach the file here for someone to repair.

This file is still 4mb zipped... any other way to send it to you?

Sorry about that, we have a cap on the upload space here.

In the browser you should find a red End of Part marker. Drag the marker all the way to the top of the feature tree as high as it will go. Then save and zip the file.

Is the zip still too large?

If not, attach it here and I will simply drag the EOP back down to analyze the part.

Although that lowered the file size majorly.. its still at 425kb, 175 more than allowed.

Send it to me directly.

Ok.. where do you want me to send it to?

I tried sending it in Pm.. that didnt work, and i have no email or other contact info for you, so im not sure how you want me to send this file to you directly.

If you look around a bit in my signature you should be able to uncover my email address.

Sorry I'm not all that great with stalker behavior :P

Hahahaha

I did find your email, but it was funny, the file which I had set up for you, with the "end of part" feature at the top of the list... well, i opened it up today, and dragged that "feature" all the way back down to the bottom and now the file works fine.. Wierd...

Thanks.

You mean you didn't try a Tools>Rebuild All first?

Another thing to try is Tools>Document Settings>Enable Advanced Feature Validation (or something like that - I don't recall the exact option) and then Rebuild All. After of course trying a simple reboot.

Welcome to the world of Inventor trouble shooting. One of the reasons I always request the file before trying to answer a question.

I've never even heard of

Tools>Rebuild All.

Or this advanced feature validation.

I've been pretty much thrown into this program at work, but due to the current state of the economy (wow hearing that more and more these days.. even im staring to say it) work WILL NOT pay for me to take training, so ive been doing a mix of online/personal projects to try and learn the program myself. I've read your manual a few times but whenever I hit a problem.. I have no where to turn to but here.

You might want to send me the file to take a look at even though it is now working.

I have seen this error many times before, and at the risk of offending, it is usually because of a workflow that I refer to as GIGO - garbage in garbage out.

Send me the file if you would like a critical analysis that might help you avoid future problems. If you skin is thin, just keep the problem to yourself. You got it to work. No harm no foul.

I have thick skin, and I can take criticism.

Your welcome to take a look.

I know that you will probably look at this model in disgust though, as I do. If i could go back and restart this model I would, but its for work, so It needs to be finished. There's alot of obvious errors.

Most noticeably the mirror/order of features.

Actually it turned out the model is much much better than most I see. I look at stuff I did just 6 months, 6 days, 6 hours ago and realize I could have used much better technique.

I consider my first attempt to be simply an effort to understand the geometry without trying to perfect the model. Then I start over - usually two or three times. I find that beginners get too much time invested in a model and are reluctant to abandon it and start over. they spend more time trying to fix a flawed model than it would have taken to finish by starting over.

Now on to your model. In general it is not all that bad, except that very very few of your sketches are fully dimensions/constrained. Especially bothers me with the first sketch.

I almost never use Projected Loops unless I'm absolutely sure the underlying geometry will never change. You used Projected Loops frequently. The type of error you received is typical with this technique if the change of underlying geometry changes the number of faces. Projected Loops are created when you use the Project Geometry tool and click on a face rather than only the explicit edges or points you need.

I don't think I saw any construction linetype in your sketches. You should make use of construction lines especially as a line of symmetry. In the attached image I show Sketch10 is unconstrained and missing a construction line from the midpoint of the projected line (I added). This could by used to add a Symmetry constraint eliminating dimensions and constraining the angles.

Also in Sketch10 there is a sick point (Pink). The sick point might be the origin of the error, and in fact, there should be an i in a circle by the sketch in the browser. Not sure why Inventor is not indicating the error. The only way in this case to remove the sick point is to delete the projected line and arc first and then reproject.

In general it looks like you are getting a good grasp on proper technique but you really should constrain all sketch geometry and avoid Projected Loops in most cases. This particular part could be modeled more efficiently on another attempt, but this one is not all that bad.

I let my system tell me when to restart a model by locking up:) That happened yesterday at a perfect time when i was contemplating starting over and modeling the part a different way.
