Hi,

My Acad 2009 is putting the dimension nodes on the current layer & not the defpoint layer. The job I'm working on has large radii dimensioned with centres that fall in other working parts of the drawing, when deleting or moving objects I'm picking up the node points as well. I assume there is a system variable which controls which layer the node is applied to but I can't find it.

Can anyone help me out.

Cheers

The help file doesn't give good information about them and I'm not clear on the information I got in school during the dark ages. This is what I know/remember about them.

Defpoints are like unicorns they are talked about, written about, but they don't really exist.

When you create a dimension the lines, text, and 'defpoint' nodes/ticks are there. Also, an unremovable layer is created called Defpoints. Nothing is on that layer. When you explode that dimension the nodes/tick disappear but the layer remains.

It seems I remember my teacher explaining that when a dimension is created the defpoint is data in the database and it creates the unremoveable defpoint layer. Also, he referred to the node/tick as the defpoint, but if it is exploded it goes away and leaves the layer behind.

That's what I understand about defpoints. ReMark, Dbroada or another of the heavy weights here might have better, more accurate information.

Back to your stuff...the dimension is on the layer you created it on and if you need to control dimensions they should all be on the same layer so you can freeze or lock to avoid manipulating them. Also, I'm not real clear on what the actual problem is and what you want to accomplish.

Ryder: I like your explanation. But who are you calling a heavyweight? I'll have you know I weigh 145 lbs. soaking wet.

Thanks for the reply Ryder76,

My problem is that I'm deleting or moving radius dimensions because the node or centre point of these large radii are in the area of the drawing I'm working on whilst the dimension is off the screen. If I delete or move items using a crossing window the node or centre point is included as well, when I return to the drawing area where the dimension was it's deleted/moved.

Surely I don't have to keep locking or freezing my dimension layer to prevent this happening.

And why would locking the layer you're not working on be a hassle?

I agreed with ReMark. Locking the dim layer would allow you to see your dimensions and not manipulate them.

If you are moving items that have dims also you could put the odd dims for the radii on a different layer temporarily (call it PIMA DIMS ) and lock it. When your finished with your revisions move those dims back to their original layer if you want or need to.
