I am not very familiar with code writing and was wondering if anyone knows how to make a code that I can make custom WWF Steel shapes. I want to be able to input flange thickness, web thickness, width, and height of the steel shape and get it on screen. I am using AutoCAD 2008. Thanks for you're help.

Why code and not dynamic blocks?

Which way would be easier to use? dynamic blocks or just writing a lisp?

The LISP as posted in the link by ReMark should provide what you need :)

I am doing work using Indian Steel and we have a lot of shapes that are WWF which are custom shapes. Just by welding Steel plates together and so I want to create my own shapes. I tried that link and it doesn't work right for me.

Try this dynamic block:

ideal to use a dynamic block on difference sizes and types of materials/equipments drawings Lisp are better on shortcut commands i think :P

Maybe we should all standardize on one set of parameters for steel shapes. Let's try to make life easier for all concerned in this rapidly shrinking world and free-trade. What do you think?

Nah! Never happen.

I was not aware that India had its own specification for steel shapes. Thanks for educating me.

How about using that same units world wide?

Almost every contry has there own standard steel shapes.

Canadia ffs has different sizes compared to america, and there next to each other.

the way to go is to not draw the steel I beam but rather have a common decription of the Ibeam save these with a name then just draw by name.

Explaining further this what the data would look like (metric beam)

UB250 250 10 230 8 4

name, 250 high, 10 thick, 230 between flanges, 8 thick, with 4 radius.

Write one program and have as many as you like use either dialog boxes or a side menu for picking sizes keep data in a seperate text file.

After writing all this checked the download above and thats exactly whats been done don't reinvent the wheel just add your beams as a new type or overwrite one of the existing.

Try this program. If I remember correctly its a very sophisticated program that draws what you need in 2D or 3D.

Same sizes designated in the same units world-wide. I could see where that could be a good thing. Now if we Americans (general populace) could just surmount our fear of the metric system!

This a very old but useful beam routine. The dat file contains the actual data. -David

I tried using this program and it won't work. When I types in beams on the command line after loading the lisp it doesnt do anything. Any help troubleshooting? It seems like this is exactly what Im looking for.

Also, to further elaborate on the steel controversy, I am doing work for a company based in India. They sometimes make their own steel shapes by welding plates together. This is due to the earthquake zones over there.

Looks like I had added some path statements to find the dat file. Try this 1. -David

He also wrote programs for channels ans standard shapes and angles. All were really good stuff
