Setting for opening drawing?

Recommended Posts

Currently in AutoCAD 2008, evertime I browse my folders and dbl click a dwg - AutoCAD opens that drawing in a new window. If I click on three drawings, AutoCAD has three different AutoCAD programs running. :o

If I'm inside AutoCAD and choose File, Open, etc... then the new drawing opens in the same AutoCAD program. I'd like for that behavior to work if I have AutoCAD already open and I browse my server thru explorer and dbl click a dwg on the server.

Is there a setting that will allow that?

Really? OK then we need to check a couple of things.

Open Explorer. At the top of the page click on Tools and then on Folder Options.

Next, click on the File Types tab. In the list of registered file types that is generated (under the column heading of Extensions), find and highlight the DWG file type.

Click on the Advanced button in the lower right hand corner of the Folder Options window.

Under the heading Actions find and highlight the word open. Now click on the Edit button to the right.

Make sure there is a checkmark in the box for Use DDE.

Does anything appear in the box under the words DDE message? If so, what? If blank please confirm.

Hmm...all is quiet on the western front.

I've got to go out into the plant for a while. In case you return and report that the DDE Message box is blank try adding the following to it...

[open ("%1")]

Close everything out by clicking on the OK button as you go. Your AutoCAD session should have been closed while you were doing all this.

It's finally working. It does not work when the file type .dwg is set to open with "AutoCAD Application", but when I changed it to open .dwg files with "AutoCAD DWG Launcher" everything is working great.

Thanks for your help!

I have a question on this same subject.

I have loaded AutoCAD 2010 recently. I also open drawings by browsing through my folders. The problem is that now when I double click to open a drawing, it tries to open the AutoCAD 2008 that is still loaded on my machine.

Is there a setting somewhere to set this? I have been through the folder options and changed the details for 'dwg' extension to the 2010.exe file, but it always goes back to the AutoCAD DWG Launcher.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

ReMark,

Thanks for the help, man. I had the same problem - ran a search on the forum - found this thread - used your solution and it worked like a charm!

ReMark & others,

I have the newest version of TrueView (which I use to convert newer versions of CAD files down to my level "2008") and every time I use it the program then becomes the default opening program for CAD files (DXF, DWG). I then have to right click on any CAD file on my computer tell the computer that AutoCAD LT 2008 is the default program to open the file - close the application - then repeat the steps that ReMark has given above. Does anyone have a work-around on this? DWG TrueView is eating my lunch!

Right-Click the file and choose "Open with" then choose AutoCAD Launcher.

SLW210,

I don't have that option.

SLW210,

I tried that earlier today and DWG TrueView opens instead.

Try AutoCAD LT Application.

Probably just easier to open AutoCAD and open the drawings through AutoCAD.

That's what I'm getting at, SLW210. I'll re-associate CAD files to AutoCAD and then go through ReMark's steps to fix the multiple programs opening and then if I ever need to convert a CAD file using TrueView, TrueView becomes the default launcher for any CAD files and I have to repeat my steps again. I'd much rather be double clicking on CAD icons than opening through CAD... but if I must - I must.

No other way around it, I have tried and searched all over. Even verticles or seperate versions if installed, use the same launcher. AFAIK, last used is the default.

Well, I hope I didn't seem like I didn't appreciate the help, SLW210. What the heck does AFAIK mean?

edit: As Far As I Know

Got it!
