open/closed polyline

Hi, another polyline question. I have several lines I want to convert to a polyline. For this I use Pedit, then join. When I do this it automaticly becomes a closed polyline. I want an open one.

But when I pedit and open the polyline it removes 1 of the line segments, while it was there in the first place.

How can I convert to an open polyline without losing lines ???

Try using MPEDIT.

Hmmm, on second thoughts, this would just convert your lines into polylines; it wouldn't join them for you.

I thought I'd give it a go anyway, but I get an Invalid option keyword after the question convert to ....

And then only changes one line to a polyline.

Pedit will join all line segments that are touching. So you must fool it by making a tiny gap at the joint where you want to, use pedit to make the polyline, then snap the two lines together. The polyline will stay open.

Yes, but then there is a gap, and then I cant use the dwg anymore.

And if you have a lot of polylines, altering all those lines so there is small gap is not really an option.

What I usually do if I have a few polylines, is convert to polyline with option option, then draw a line in the gap, and with fillet add the line to the polyline. This way you get a closed polyline without it being closed.

The technique I was thinking about involves using grips and closing the gap by stretching, so you still have the same number of llines but an open polyline. Of course, if you have many to do, it would take time.

I was hoping it was a setvar to keep the line.

This is what I want.

This is a closed polyline, note no end point.

at point X=1208.8716 Y= 773.9173 Z= 0.0000

at point X=1211.8256 Y= 777.6171 Z= 0.0000

at point X=1211.6760 Y= 774.1041 Z= 0.0000

 

This is a open polyline, note the same start and end point

Both show the same line in Cad, but not in another programm.

First make the closed Polyline, then break the polyline as shown, then using grips. stretch the broken polyline to close (but polyline remains open).

Yes, but unfortunatly still involves a lot of work if you have a lot of polylines.

Fuzzy brain this morning so forgive me but didn't the way Pedit used to work the user had to specifically want to join the lines? In other words, lines were converted to polylines but they were not automatically joined. Isn't that what we want to do here or am I really in need of that cup of coffee?

In the pedit command you can still specify that you want them joined, and thats what I want, but not closed.

The trouble with AutoCAD that it is all or nothing. You cannot tell Pedit to join everything except the last one. It joins EVERY junction

What I dont get is why it deletes the last line when converting to polyline. Its already drawn, and I'm telling it to remove it.

How else can it open a closed polyline, except by deleting the last leg?

 

There is no option to tell it to just undo the last junction.

 

Knowing this, you have to work around its unthinking behaviour.
