Hi

Could anyone please explain to me why there is a diagonal line running down the side of this wall (pictured) in my model?

How did you create those walls? Did you create them in Max, or did you Import them from another program? If you made them in Autocad and then Imported them, you will sometimes get those diagonal lines. You can just click on the line to select it and then hit the Backspace key to get rid of it.

My other thought would be that your wall is actually an Editable Patch instead of an Editable Poly. Select the wall and check what it says in the Modify panel stack window. If it says "Editable Patch" you will need to right click and Convert to Editable Poly. Then you will be able to get rid of the diagonals by using the Backspace key.

It looks like you also have overlapping geometry at the corners. That's going to cause problems later if you don't fix it.

Hi Cad64

I created them in Max. I can't see what you suggested

Do you mean in this panel?

* I should mention this line appears on saving and re-opening the file.

Ok, now I see what you did. You created the walls using the AEC Extended "Wall" option. I never use that. I create everything using Standard and Extended Primitives.

So, I opened a new file, created some AEC Walls, saved, closed and re-opened, but I'm not seeing the lines that you're seeing.

Do all of your walls have those lines, or just that one?

Did you apply any modifiers or do any editing on that wall?

Yes I created them using AEC Extended. Its only that wall which is showing the line and I haven't made any modifications to it.

Does making walls using Standard and Extended Primitives make a difference?

• I've just this minute re-checked the drawing at it seems to have disapeared. At this moment in time I am inserting windows in to the walls.

I'm not really sure why those lines are there.

Have you checked the "Object Properties" of that wall and compared it to the properties of the other walls to see what might be different? Check to make sure "Edges Only" is checked.

If it's not causing any problems, then I would just leave it and don't worry about it. Otherwise, just create a new wall and delete that one. I don't really have any other advice since I'm unable to reproduce this on my machine.

The line has disappeared? :?

I would say you're having problems with your graphics card then.

What are the specs on your computer?

Are you working on a laptop?

If you're working on a desktop PC I would suggest upgrading to a much better graphics card, if possible. What you currently have was never meant for doing 3D or graphics work. You also have a pretty underpowered processor. You might want to look into getting a new 64 bit machine with better quality hardware. As you progress into building bigger and more complex models, you're going to continue having issues with the machine you are currently working on.

:? I thought my "Laptop" was reasonably powerful - obviously not

I assumed my laptop met all of the spec's that Max required -what sort of specification should I be looking at when upgrading & can it come in the form of a Laptop?

I would not recommend a laptop, especially if you are going to be doing any rendering. Get yourself a desktop PC.

Ok:wink:

Theoretically would I still be able to render my interior once the materials & lights etc have been added & would it effect the quality? I think it would take a lot of time to render on my machine, that's a given.

The problem with laptops is that they tend to overheat and shut down when rendering, which is a very processor intensive procedure that tends to generate a lot of heat. If the temperature gets too high, the laptop will shut down. That's why a desktop is a much better choice because of the fans and cooling units that can be installed. You can, of course, try doing it on your laptop. If your scenes are not too large and/or complex your laptop might be able to handle it. But I'm sure you will start to run into problems as your scenes start getting more complex.

That is a problem considering I only bought the laptop about 7/8 months ago and getting a new one would be out of the question at the moment. Anyway i really appreciate your advice on this.

All the best.
