MickGrif Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I recently got a CNC router which works of images from AutoCAD. However I have a problem. When I import a vector image into CAD the image has alot of lines repeating over the picture. As a result teh router reads each line seperatly and so the router will go over a part of the picture 5 to 6 times, ruining the picture. I was wondering if there was any easy way to trace over the outline of a picture in CAD?? Quote
sparklerach Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Try the OVERKILL command...it gets rid of extra lines, etc. Quote
MickGrif Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 Try the OVERKILL command...it gets rid of extra lines, etc. Thanks for the reply, unfortunately OVERKILL does not solve my problem. Here is a pic of the problem As you can see several lines are in a row were there should be only one. Aside from going around the picture and deleting every single line which is to time consuming, is there an easy way to delete the extra lines or perhaps be able to trace over the ones I want? Quote
Tankman Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Perhaps trace the image, remove the image after your drawing is completed? What I see from your drawing section I frequently encounter when converting a *.pdf to a *.dwg format. Would be nice to see the whole drawing. Care to attach it in *.dwg format? Quote
ReMark Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 What is the source of the vector image you speak of? How are you tracing it? Quote
sparklerach Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 We have this problem when copying and pasting old Autosketch drawingss into AutoCad. But if we export to dxf from Autosketch and then import to AutoCad, all lines etc are fine. So as ReMark asked, what is the source? Quote
MickGrif Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 What I see from your drawing section I frequently encounter when converting a *.pdf to a *.dwg format. That is what I am doing, I get a picture from the internet and convert it to a vector image using "Vector Magic" I then convert the resulting pdf to a dwg. Perhaps I should not be doing this, if so is there an easier way to bring images into autocad? Would be nice to see the whole drawing. Care to attach it in *.dwg format? I have attached the full image from above but this is only a test and I would like to work on several different images other than this one. 598px-Peace_dove.dwg Quote
ReMark Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 No wonder the quality is so poor. Too much converting going on. Can't you just import the image in raster form and trace over it that way? Quote

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do I go about that, I thought that AutoCAD could only open DWG,DWS,DXF,DWT file types? Quote
ReMark Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 MickGrif: One small correction. Your question is not stupid. Yes, AutoCAD has the ability to import raster images. For an overview of the subject I suggest you consult your Help files. Quote
ReMark Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Working with Raster Images in AutoCAD. Work with grey scale. Scan at 150dpi to 200dpi. Use third-party software, if available, to de-spot or de-speckle the image. This not only cleans the image up but may result in a smaller file size (always a good thing). What is your processor speed and how much RAM is installed in your computer? Both affect working with raster images in AutoCAD. Quote
ReMark Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 From AutoCAD 2007 Help file. To attach an image Click Insert menu » Raster Image Reference. In the Select Image File dialog box, select a file name from the list or enter the name of the image file in the File Name box. Click Open. In the Image dialog box, use one of the following methods to specify insertion point, scale, or rotation: -Select Specify On-Screen to use the pointing device to insert the image at the location, scale, or angle you want. -Clear Specify On-Screen and enter values under Insertion Point, Scale, or rotation. To view the unit of measurement for the image, click Details. Click OK. Quote

Now I was just wondering if there was a way to automatically trace around the edges of this image, as the router works of lines drew in autoCAD and not from the picture (the router only picks up the outer frame) Quote
ReMark Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Well you got me there MickGrif. I do not know the answer to that one. Sorry. Quote
