Help creating an angle constraint between a wheel and center pin

I am trying to ultimately create a driven constraint to rotate a wheel about a center pin. I have a tutorial for creating an angle constraint between 2 opposing faces of a hinge, but I can't figure out how to set up for a wheel and pin. This has got to be pretty basic for all you Inventor gurus...help Please!

If your trying to create a rotational relationship, you have to constrain the axis of the pin and the wheel.

The pin and the wheel are constrained with an Insert Constraint. I was able to solve my problem by selecting the XZ plane for the pin and the YZ plane for the wheel. I came to conclude that the angle constraint needs to reference 2 flat surfaces; both sharing an XY or Z plane. Since all flat surfaces of my 2 objects are normal to the rotational plane, I could not select any surface of my objects as a reference. Thanks for the reply though.

 

I have a new problem and that is to make the wheel turn on the pin in Dynamic Simulation. The Convert Assembly Constraints did not convert my drive constraint, so I am trying to manually insert a joint. Do you know which joint I should use. I have tried several joint including the spatial joint with no success. Is there a cylinder joint I can use? The only cyllinder joint that comes closes is a cylinder roller around in a much bigger diameter cylinder.

Sorry, Only have inventor 10, no Dynamic Simulation. I'm sure someone with a newer version will chime in.

A rotational constraint really wont do you any good unless their are two rotating parts. Try an angular constraint between the XY planes of each part. Then drive it.

Steve - you should start a new thread to avoid confusion.

 

hydrobro - When you use the automatic conversion of assembly constraints to dynamic simulation joints the Revolution Joint is not available as it (should) convert from your assembly constraint. Often Inventor tries to "help" you avoid overconstrained assemblies by ignoring some Insert constraints (for example - think of threaded fasteners in an assembly - we usually don't bother with fully constraining removing the rotational DOF - we only use the Insert to place. In DS we treat as welded (single) parts the ones fastened together rather than putting a Revolution Joint on the fasteners. If you turn off automatic conversion of Assembly Constraints to Dynamic Simulation Joints you would get access to more Joint types - including Revolution Joint.

But there is probably a better way. Right click on the part (assembly) in the grounded folder and select Retain DOF - this will automatically convert your Insert Constraint to Revolution Joint and move the body into the Mobile group.

You should get this book http://www.vdssolutions.co.uk/ DS is a complex topic and if you can't get training at least get a book. The referrenced book is in an easy step-by-step tutorial format (as opposed to theory - it does have some theory, but mostly just how to use the tools).

In the meantime, you might post your assembly here.
