Our old HP 800PS 42" color plotter is starting to go south. :(

Can anyone recommend a comparable replacement model?

Posted

How old is old? You know replacement parts are available (I think).

I don't know exactly - we got it used a few years ago. But I wouldn't know what parts to replace? It keeps locking up and needing re-booted.

Is there an HP-GL/2 card in it?

Could it be a firmware problem?

Posted

I just flashed new firmware to it Friday eve. We'll see if that was it... not tested fully yet.

I would still like to try to budget for a replacement/2nd plotter for next year. Hopefully something a little faster. Any suggestions?

Suggestions? Not at the moment. We're still using a HP DesignJet 500+ at the moment. About the only other company I am even aware of is Oce'. Have you looked at any of their products?

Posted

Not really. I looked briefly at the newer HP plotters, but that's it.

This is the second 800 I have had and i liked them well enough. I judt don't have any knowlege of the newer HPs...

What's your budget on this?

Are you interested in just a black/white printer or color?

How plots/prints do you make per day?

Posted

That's what I need to decide - how much to ask for for next year...

We bought our current 800 used for around $2k. Since we are a small office (5 total, only 2 or 3 use the plotter) I can't justify too much...

The 800 is an "E-size" printer? You're running off of a roll of paper right?

Posted

Yep, typicaly run a 36" roll.

We would need color and E size.

I guess you could always check eBay. I see they have a HP DesignJet 755CM for $844. What a bargain. LOL Not even sure what year that came out. It will handle E-size prints and does color.

Contact your local HP authorized dealer. Maybe he just took a trade-in that he's willing to part with at a reasonable price. Couldn't hurt to ask. Or ask for a bigger budget and buy a new printer.
