hi all. I have a file with multiple dxf drawings on it. I I want to take certain ones from that file and insert them on a new drawing. I wblock the drawing I want and insert it into the new drawing but it won't let me trim or break a block. Is there another way I can do this

Try DXFIN (or DXBIN if they're binary)

After rereading your question, I'm confused by what you mean that you "have a file with multiple dxf drawings on it". Is your "file" a .dwg or what?

Maybe the word file should have been folder?

I have 3 folders with about 20 different dxf files on each. One is a mountain folder the other is trees folder and the last is wildlife. I need to take elements from each one and put in a new drawing to make a silohuette to burn on the plasma. I have been picking the ones I want and wblock them to a new folder then inserting them in the new drawing but I can't trim or break when I put them together. I tried the dxfin but still won't let me trim or break.

I am self taught on CAD so I still have a learning curve. I have been wblocking out then inserting on a blank drawing. I would then dxf out then dxf in so I could trim and break each individually but man does that take a long time

Sounds like the dxfs were made from blocks that didn't allow exploding. You can change that in the Block Definition dialog box; start the Block command.

Thanks I will try that. I believe I know what you are saying. My CAD is on another computer the kids are on so as soon as they are done I will try. I'm running AutoCaD2002. I really hope this works.

I don't think that there were Behaviour options way back in AutoCAD 2002.

But I don't see why DXFIN should not work starting with a new empty drawing. As each DXF file opens up in that drawing, you could do a quick LIST and see whether it had been made as a block, and if so, an EXPLODE would put matters to rights :D

I think I've got it. I used copy and paste to bring each object to the drawing. Took me a little while to get the hang of opening and closing windows but it worked like a charm. Thanks for all the help folks

Copy 'n paste works but, using AutoCAD many ways might be possible to accomplish the task.

All worked out well, thanks.
