LearningQuickly Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Program: Civil3D 2010 Upon binding my dwgs to send to clients, sometimes I run across a serious problem. My xref'ed site plans disappear but my xref manager still lists it as attached, the layer manager still has every xrefed layer, and all other xrefs in the dwg will bind perfectly. I have broken down all complex objects, purged, audited, cleaned up any excess scales, and even created new fresh dwgs for the xref and the drawing in question; all actions have ended in failure. I have even searched the AutoDesk forums for a solution and have found nothing substantial. You guys are my last hope. PLEASE HELP! Solution: #1 Use RECOVERALL command on .dwg file that the xrefs dissapear from. It will remove all proxy objects and excess scales in the file that is causing it to dissapear in the first place. #2 WBLOCK out the dwg file and any xrefs that are dissapearing and insert them into new "clean" .dwg files. Must be done to all files. Quote
tzframpton Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 It's definitely a known thing in AutoCAD. Who knows. The best fix I've found is just to do an eTransmit and do a Save As. Binds them all every time. Quote
LearningQuickly Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 I appreciate someone at least responding, so thanks. I have already tried the eTransmit previously, and still the xref disappears. Quote
tzframpton Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 That is weird. It's always worked for me. Quote
LearningQuickly Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Yeah, this has happened multiple times now, and its REALLY starting to get old. The only thing different this time is that the solutions I mentioned before including the eTransmit have always fixed the problem. This time....no dice. I would post the file but it has a classified location and details included within it...so my company wont allow me to. Quote
Scoobydoo Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 When you select the XREF file to bind, check the insert button instead of bind. That has always worked for me. Quote
Scoobydoo Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 But make sure you save it down to a different file name if you do not want to comprimise your original file! Quote
LearningQuickly Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Thanks for replying Scooby...but I have already tried that avenue and it was a dead end also. I usually have to use the Bind>Insert instead of Bind>Bind due to the fact that it doesnt add any extra characters to the layer names. Quote
Scoobydoo Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Ok, I am grasping at straws here, but are your XREF's attached or overlaid? I don't know if that will make a difference or not, but it could be something worth checking into (if you haven't already!). Also, does your AutoCAD have the latest maintenance pack installed on it? This could be a problem as well. If that doesn't work, then it could be one of those strange autocad glitches. Quote
LearningQuickly Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 No worries man, I'm at a loss myself. I have the xrefs attached and I do have the latest updates from AutoDesk installed. I can't overlay xrefs due to the drafting standards required by the government, but I'm gonna give it a shot right now anyway just to see if it'll work. If it doesn't then maybe it is just one of those strange ACAD quirks... EDIT: Just tried to overlay the xref rather than attach....still not the answer. Quote

Well, I guess if all else fails, you could just insert it in as a block and explode it! Quote
LearningQuickly Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Thats exactly what I had to do so that I could send the .dwg file to the client.... Quote
LearningQuickly Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 Edited OP. Solution found. Thanks for your help guys. Quote
chelsea1307 Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 you mind posting the solution so if anyone else has the same problem theres another answer to try Quote
tzframpton Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I also found another solution a few days ago.... use the -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command. This binds the XREF's and haven't seen any problem yet, because it seems to strip all access proxy graphics, etc as well. Quote
KimbleC Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I have been having a similar problem. If I use R2008 to bind my xref it disappears and the XrefManager still states that it is there and unbound. Now using CLASSICXREF command gets an old XrefManager interface up which in my case advised me that I had proxy objects in my xref file. However I am able to bind this same drawing using R2004 so go figure. So my question now is how can I remove these proxy objects from my xref file so that I am able to bind my drawing using R2008. I have been advised that I could use DWGTrueView to bind these files....Did not work. Someone also suggested that I should WBlock the xref file....Does not work because you are unable to copy proxy objects. Lastly people have suggested that I use eTransmit but this is not what we need to do. Sorry about the rant but this problem has been on going for several years. Quote
LearningQuickly Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Kimble, Unfortunately, I haven't used R2008 before, but I had a similar problem with proxy objects in dwg's that have been sent to our firm from sub's. I had to COMPLETELY explode all objects and run a CleanupScales program to get the xrefs to bind correctly (via a manual bind or via eTransmit). Here is a link to the CleanupScales process from autodesk.com. http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/cleanupscales_eng.html Hope this helps. Quote
Eastham11 Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 We had a problem with a system variable where it was only "partially" opening the Xref file and would essentially make the xref disappear.... Set system variable OPENPARTIAL = 0 Quote
