You could use Layer Filters, but it doesn't work quite as effectively. Quote

If you want to control layer visibility or lock status of the "sub-layers" by making changes to the "parent layer", then layer filters will work. Quote
Rudbeckia Posted September 16, 2009 Author Posted September 16, 2009 Thanks, yes thats what I want to do, I want to choose a "parent layer" and have layers in that layer that all turn off or on or lock or whatever when I adjust the parent layer Quote

Coosbaylumber Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 I have been using ACAD since about 1989, and the only way I can think of creating additional layers is to give them unique names. The menu master will automatically create a layer once you XREF in a drawing. Thus a layer 3 on the parent drawing, may have same attributes as a layer 3 in XREF'd drawing, or a referred to one within that XREF. It can get quite deep, and still be and look the same. Wm. Quote
rkmcswain Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 thanks for the help! Make sure you create all your layers and filters in your template drawing(s). You don't want to have to recreate those each time you start a new drawing. Quote
