Opening files- why are they read only?

I'm temporarily using a different CAD set up and I can't figure this out. When I have a drawing open that contains xrefs- if I go to open one of the xref'd drawings it will only open read only - even though it is not set to be read only. I have to close the drawing, open the xref'd drawing, work on it, close it, and then re-open the first one.

I need to be able to open the xref'd drawings to work on them and then refresh them in the original file without closing each one.

When you open the xref try doing it through the xref manager to see if it makes any difference. All you need to do is open the xref manager, select and right click, selet 'open xref'. You can also do it by selecting the xref in your file, right click and select 'open xref'.

Weird- it works when I do it through the xref manager. Thank you for the suggestion! I will do it this way until I am set up permanently and can find a real fix. THANK YOU!

Open your OPTIONS dialog, click on the "Open and Save" tab, go to the "External References" section, under "Demand Load Xrefs" and make sure it's set to "Enabled with Copy".
