Hi, Help please!!

Question:

How can I display an opacity map in model space?

I mean real-time (live) display the opacity image, not rendering.

(partly transparent)

For example, displaying an irregular label on a rounded glass bottle.

I'm not sure what you mean but the label on the wine bottle would have to be a solid seperate to the bottle...then make it a different material.

Yiufaipoon,

Since you have asked the same question 3 times, I have merged them all together into this one thread. Asking the same question multiple times will not get you more answers. Just ask your question once and then wait for replies. If someone has an answer they will post it.

Why do you need to see this in real time? Materials are processed when rendered and this is where the transparency happens. You won't be able to see it in the viewport.

if its only the front of the lable that is irregular in shape then you could draw a 2d shape of the label extrude it and subtract it from a cyclinder that has a wall thickness of the paper. as for displaying real time change your display mode to realistic

Realistic display mode will allow you to see your materials on the model, but it will not display transparency. You only get those effects when the material is rendered.

if you have a transparent material then it will display transparent on the screen see attached, admitidly it doesn't show correctly i guess but it does illustrate transparent

I know that if you use a glass material, you can set the Opacity slider to see Transparency, but he's asking about opacity maps, I believe? And, as far as I know, you can't view those correctly in real time. They always display as a square map until you render.

i would model the label seperate anyway becssue, afterall, it is a piece of paper glued onto the glass...this way you can use the opacity setting of the material rather then using a map...

thanks for the ideas.

It seems that I should model the label separately.

But then come up with the question on how to model the label in an effectively way? the label is wrap around the bottle and can't see the whole label at one view.

the bottle with the label is an example. I am working on more complex model.

im at a loss for 08 or 09 since i havent used them yet but other software i have used has included an emboss and etch commands. also there are project commands to project a 2d line onto a surface.

in 07 or earlier what i would probably do is draw each letter in 2d and each at an angle, say you were going around a bottle, you would want each letter perpendicular to the surface. Say your letters were POP, draw each letter, rotate them as they would be perp. to the surface, extrude a certain thickness, draw 3 circles. one that is the OD of the bottle which you will subtract from the 3 letters effectively creating one object. then two other circles, one larger than the bottle and letters, another just barely larger than the OD of the bottle, use these to create the curve on the outside of your letters.

it really depends on what happens to the letters next, if its just for modeling or if you will need to use the file to produce something. Another option is to create a surface that is the size of your label and apply a material you create with your letters on it.

the bottle with a label:2163493110103528249BHhIsS_ph.jpg

You will need two models.First bottle and second shape of label model and place inside or outside of bottle as you like. Then you need to create transparent material to attach bottle and mapping to cylinder type.Next your label create with two maps.First must be image of label with texture map and second must be opacity image of label with opacity map. Then attach cylindical mapping. Finally hit render and adjust material scale vale to catch your best.
