You might want to go through these tutorials http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/DSG322/inventor_surface_tutorials.htm and if you have Inventor 2010 examine the attached part file (select Skip all when it requests bmp files, and pull down the red End-of-Part marker step-by-step to see how the part was constructed).
