Got a quick question. I'm currently using AutoCAD 2009 and doing some work documenting some tools for our safety group. I've taken pictures of the tools and photoshopped them to get rid of background color and just leave the tools. I've attached the images to a custom template so I could document the dimensions of the tools. Everything has worked well so far.

Now for the tricky part. Once I've created the .dwg I need to delete the original pictures. Problem is, once I do that and open up a tool .dwg all I see is the dimension lines and a file path. Is there any way to keep the picture embedded and allow me to delete the original, or will I have to continue what I'm currently doing and trace the tool using the line tool in AutoCAD?

Once you delete the image, your drawing doesn't have anything to reference for the image. I have the same problem sometimes myself, the only way I have ever gotten around it is to either

A) Trace around the drawing, or

B) not to delete the image and keep it.

There may be a way, but I don't know of it sorry

Open the image in Photoshop, clipboard everything and paste into acad. It will be an embedded OLE object.

or

If you have Illustrator, you can export the images as dxf.

Thanks AlanJT. It worked! I had to redraw the dimension lines, but it embedded just fine and I could delete the original. Thanks for the help. If I run into any more problems, I'll know who to ask.

Glad you got it sorted out. :)

Thought I had it all figured out...I was so happy too...

I managed to get some of the pictures to embed but not all of them will work right. I use the lasso tool in Photoshop to grab the tool, then use Cut to put it on the clipboard, but then when I try to paste to AutoCAD I get a blank rectangle...what have I done wrong?

figgered it out!

Put the image(s) in your drawing(s), then, "DRAWORDER", "B" (back).

Leave the image in your drawing over which you have dimensioned.

I don't do a lot of this but, has worked (I think) in the past.
