Hi, I am taking a beginner Cad course and am having trouble with my home version; Civil 3D 2009. At school I can use the command "hideobjects" or use the lightbulb in the lower right corner of the window to hide or isolate objects. At home it doesn't show the lightbulb and when I type in hideobjects it says it is an unknown command. If I type in HI on the command line it says "Hide" then shows Command: _VSCURRENT. Any thoughts?

HideObjects does show up in Help but you have to look under command reference. In your User's Guide it can be found under Working with drawings. Refer to Drawing command reference.

Why isn't it the command recognized? Sorry, I don't the answer to that. I'm not a Civil 3D user.

Note disclaimer above.

This is a total stab in the dark. If you type ARXLOAD is the command listed?

If that does not compute, as they say, type ARX then "L" for Load.

No, ARXLOAD didn't work. This is what I am getting:

Command: hideobjects

Unknown command "HIDEOBJECTS". Press F1 for help.

Command: hi

HIDE

Command: _VSCURRENT

Enter an option [2dwireframe/3dwireframe/3dHidden/Realistic/Conceptual/Other]

: _H

Command: *Cancel*

Command: arxload

Unknown command "ARXLOAD". Press F1 for help.

Command: *Cancel*

ReMark, Sorry, I am very new at this. I typed in ARX and then load and a window popped up "Select ARX/DBX File" with many folders and/or "AutoCad runtime extensions" to choose from. I'm not sure where to go next??

I'm making up most of this as we go along too. LOL

Normally I would expect Civil 3D to load ARX applications. Maybe it didn't?

Anyway, you're look for an ARX file (ex. - AcPublish.arx) that has the command HideObjects contained within the file name. Start in the root folder. No luck? Then start checking the subfolders in a logical manner. It's like playing detective but neither one of us has a clue. Think of it as an adventure.

Another blind step into the abyss.

If you select the object (for example, a line) then right-click does a list appear with Isolate Object on it? If so, when you click on Isolate Object does Hide Selected Object appear next?

Select the line. Right-click and then click Isolate Object > Hide Selected Object.

As for stepping into the Abyss; selecting the object and right clicking doesn't bring up isolate or hide objects either. I was using that in class without any problems.

As to your previous post..

I found the ext you mentioned, and it is already loaded. How in the world did you know which one to choose, there are over 100 listed.

Command: arx

Enter an option [?/Load/Unload/Commands/Options]: l

Runtime Extension 'C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009\AcPublish.arx' is

already loaded.

I tried another one that had hide in it:

Runtime Extension 'C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009\achide.arx' is

already loaded.

I used AcPublish as an example.

I did not know which one to choose. I was hoping HideObjects was an ARX application like the two examples you found.

I'd suggest a Repair but I'm not sure we have exhausted all avenues of enlightenment yet. LOL

By Jove I think I've got it.

Read this now!

Note: The command is included in something called an Advantage Pack. Advantage Packs are for those users that signed up ($$$) for the Subscription program.

I don't have the advantage pack. Are you saying I have to have this pack for the basic hide option to work? Why does autocad list the option in the "help" section and not tell me that it is an extra?

In the meantime I have to take a break, but I'll be back! Thanks

Just when I thought I could take a break.

OK. Let's recap. You asked about a specific command called HideObjects. I believe I found the source of the command. It is part of the Advantage Pack. If you are not on Subscription (costs about $450/year) then you will not be able to download and install the Advantage Pack. End of story.

Now, at least in plain AutoCAD, there is indeed a HIDE command. But this is not to be confused with HideObjects. Which command do you really want? From the AutoCAD Help file:

HIDE

"Regenerates a three-dimensional wireframe model with hidden lines suppressed."

Lol. I am sorry I'm not clear. You are very patient! You should take a break!! I am going to until tomorrow. I have a big end of the semester project and I'm suppose to use 80% of the commands from the given list and I am only at 35%. I seem to be spending all my time on little things like this, so I really really do appreciate all the advice. So back to it...

I would be happy to just have the plain Hide command work. When I type in hide on the command line then immediately the vscurrent pops up with the H, and then the command prompt again. I am not typing in anything except hide. This happens whether I first select the object or not.

Command: hide

Command: _VSCURRENT

Enter an option [2dwireframe/3dwireframe/3dHidden/Realistic/Conceptual/Other]

: _H

Also as I said previously, when I right click on the object the isolate/hide option does not come up. And, I don't have the light bulb showing in the bottom right side of the screen.

From help:

Alternatively, you can click the light bulb exx1_isolate_bulb_on.png in the drawing window status bar and click Hide Objects.

From AutoCAD Help:

HIDE

"In a 3D drawing, HIDE starts VSCURRENT and sets the visual style to 3D Hidden in the current viewport. You can view all the settings for 3D Hidden in the Visual Styles Manager."

The HIDE command does not work on individual objects.

You never said whether or not you are on Subscription.

I don't have it currently, but I may be able to get it. Thanks for all your help.

Well I downloaded and installed a similar Advantage Pack for AutoCAD 2010 and now I have the Isolate/Hide Object commands. So, it is I who must thank you.
