unkis17 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I did some searching around here and didn't find what I am looking for (1st time poster, short time lurker), so I guess it is finally time to post. What I am looking for is a DWG /DXF viewer extension to Windows Explorer. Does anyone know of a Freeware or Shareware program that acts kind the same way JPGs files do when in Windows Explorer. By that I mean either thumbnail view or Filmstrip view Thank you, Unkis Quote
ScribbleJ Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 What OS are you using? In XP the thumbnails show up when you do not have your folders frame open in Windows Explorer. Also do a search on AutoCad Drawing Quick Viewer. There is some out there that are free. Quote
rkmcswain Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 It's built into Windows XP and later. Quote
unkis17 Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 I am using XP 64-bit and it does NOT show up. I have checked I am in thumbnail view and all I get is the Icon for DWG. (The Folder Frame is NOT open)? Unkis Quote
rkmcswain Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Did you try it on the same directory as shown? If the drawings are older or do not have a preview embedded for some other reason, then the preview will not show, no matter what you use. Quote
unkis17 Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 rkmcswain, I checked the sample dir and nothing. There were a few files in that dir, but their was a file in the \Samples\ Dir that stated they are no longer included on the DVD and were available online. I DLed them and placed them in the Samples\ Dir and still no good? Quote
ScribbleJ Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I'm not sure if this has any affect on Explorer or not but its worth checking into. Under your options in AutoCad go to the Open and Save tab and there is a button there for Thumbnail Preview Settings. Maybe this is disabled for some reason in yours. Quote
unkis17 Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 I checked the settings ScribbleJ and all checks out as it should. Sorry no dice on this one. Quote

Since I've never had to deal with this I don't know where to start looking. I'm thinking that it may be a Windows setting issue but I am grasping at straws on that one. Quote
JBS Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 I found this last year for my co-workers that don't have CAD: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?id=6703438&siteID=123112 It works pretty slick for just viewing! -edit- I jsut re-read your post and I assumed you were looking for a way to VIEW dwgs in Explorer and that you didn't have CAD. My bad. Quote
Patrick Hughes Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Dwgs saved to any version prior to 2000 do not allow windows thumbnail extraction. I've got a program you might want to try called DwgGrid. It will give you thumbnails in a side bar along with the detail view. Also works for Inventor, Revit, SolidWorks and other CAD files. The thumbnail side bar is sizable so you can easily enlarge the thumbnails. You can also print contact sheets of you selected files. It is a thumbnail viewer not a drawing viewer www.engds.com/Products/DwgGrid/DwgGrid.html Quote
