Trisha Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I have been using autocad for some years now and have have recently started to look at inventor. I am wondering if there is possible to convert a dwg file into inventor and make it solid? Is there any good tutorial-pages for Inventor on the net? Quote
JD Mather Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I am wondering if there is possible to convert a dwg file into inventor and make it solid? I recommend that you forget any intentions of using DWG in Inventor for a while, yes it is possible - but it will slow you down in learning the correct Inventor techniques. Check this document http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2006/MA13-3%20Mather.pdf and this one (slight differences) http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2007/MA105-1L%20Mather.pdf What version of Inventor do you have? After you have a good understanding of Inventor techniques you might check http://labs.autodesk.com for an add-in that facilitates dwg 2D to Inventor 3D. (DWG 3D can be imported directly into Inventor). Quote
Ryder76 Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 I have only taken a training class with Inventor, but I have to agree with JD here. I am a long time 2D Cadder with board experience as well. I understand the desire to import a dwg and have it converted, but it doesn't work well. Once I got my head around the way Inventor approaches it's process I found that it can be easier/better. When you have finished the model and are making it into 2D, the 2D is so much better and easier than if you draft the 2D from scratch. Just my Inventor, newbie 2 cents worth. Quote

Completely agree, autodesk has made some impressive improvments with Inventor 2010 which I am using now, I can finally say it can REPLACE Pro-E hands down. Quote

Export your 3D autocad solids as .SAT files and import into Inventor. They are what we call dumb solids, meaning the geometry cannot be driven by sketches or constraints as would you would normally in Inventor. I use both Inventor and AutoCAD and interchange data all the time. Go through some of these simple tutorials for some basics: KC Quote
JD Mather Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Export your 3D autocad solids as .SAT files and import into Inventor. Why do this extra work? Inventor will import 3D AutoCAD directly - no need to change file format as already pointed out in this thread. They are what we call dumb solids, meaning the geometry cannot be driven by sketches or constraints as would you would normally in Inventor. Free Feature Recognition add-in http://labs.autodesk.com can be used to build feature tree in many cases. Quote
Lazer Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 You tube has some great tutorials, also the cad geeks.com have great free tut's. Quote
Trisha Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 Thanks for the reply! I am using inventor 2010 professional. You`ve probably right that I should learn all the basic befor I start converting drawings, but I just wondered if it was possible:) I manage to draw small components and put them together, but there are a lots of functions that I don`t know how to use. Have orderd an inventor book from Autodesk. It`s about thousand pages, and hopefully I will be a bit viser after reading that one:) Youtube was a good Idea, thanks Quote
jenster88 Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 i am also new to autodesk inventor 2010 and i have went through the vtc video tutorial and got the basic of how to use the program but i can't figure out how to do anything. i am trying to make a bicycle and a trike and don't have a clue where to start. i don't know which part to make first and how would i make the wheel Quote
linnmaster Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I can finally say it can REPLACE Pro-E hands down. That's a very bold statement. "Really?" I myself probably still prefer Pro-E, however, I've adjusted to Inventor and now going back to Pro-E, I'm very rusty lol ... and now I'm not sure what version they are up to ... and I only have up to WF2.0 . I guess it's all about adapting and getting familiar with different platforms. Quote
