Well....I've been using Autocad for many years, and have never used paper space in the traditional way. Like for different views of mechanical type drawings. I'm struggling just trying to explain my question.

In my new job everyone except the five electrical people (me included) uses Solid Works and create parts and models. The electrical folks use ACAD for wiring diagram and the like. The "Standard" here is to draw in model space and print from paper space. Paper space is where the title block is and it is linked to PDM.

The guy that is in charge of PDM and ALL templates hasn't made a template for the electrical folks. I told him I wanted to make sure that the electrical text printed out the same size every time no matter how large the "model" was. Like when you zoom in and out of the PS viewport the size of the text changes when you print it from different zooms. I don't want that. Because I'm used to having the titleblock in MS and developing font sizes, blocks, drawings to fit an 11X17 sheet I can't really draft in model space, print in paper space zooming as needed. The "working space" whatever it happens to be has to be the same size so that when I print the font prints the same size.

This aforementioned guy says I don't understand paper space. I know he's right, but I don't think he understands what I need to accomplish either.

Good grief, can anyone interpret what I am asking for and help me with an answer?:?:(

Good tip, still trying to figure it out. Never used annotative anything before.

Does the PDM guy used annotative scaling (can be used for blocks, text, hatching, etc.)?

There is another way but I'll wait for your reply because it may negate what I would tell you anyway.

P.S. - I tried annotative scaling for the first time back in January. It took me three different tutorials to figure it all out! LOL But I did accomplish the task. Been there, done that, may not go back for a while.

Hey ReMark-

I don't think he does. When I told him I was looking into annotative text to help my problem he gave me a blank stare and then said," don't worry about it my template will fix everything you need.:?:unsure:

Maybe this magic template is already set up with annotative text?

OK, for what it's worth. I draw my objects in model space. My title block and border along with all notes, callouts and dimensions are placed in my layout where everything is drawn 1:1. Scaled viewports (in my layout) provide me the views of my model space objects. The drawing is plotted from the layout at 1:1. That's the basics.

Until you find out more about what Mr. PDM has up his sleeve there's no need for me to get any more specific. Remember: different strokes for different folks.

Got that right - thanks and I'll get back to you when I either figure out how to handle my stuff or get the magic template that fixes everything.

Sounds like a plan Ryder. Everything going well otherwise I hope?

Good here so far. The place has an open common area in the center of the cubicles with a large flat screen tv with remote (right now it has the olympics on it), two HUGE bean bag chairs, a bistro table with bar stools, and a picnic table. If you prefer there is another area with another tv, sofa, chair, and salt water aquarium for a little de- stress staring. One of the managers has a dart board in his office and another has a nerf basketball goal. We all wear jeans and steel toes. The break room has high end stainless appliances for our use and two more round table with chairs. I two monitors - one large and one small and a slick computer. So far everyone here has been very helpful and friendly.

It usually takes a while to really get settled in, but the transition has been made easier by the friendly nature of everyone and the laid back atmosphere.

I decided to just work around the messed up template and create a working space inside model space and scale the text and blocks to fit the area that will print so that it is legible and consistant. Whenever I get those new templates I revisit what I need then. Time is money and the work has to get out.:D

We do this for mechanical part details, assemblies and layouts - Except that we have dimensions and notes in modelspace as with the scale factor set in the dimension style.

We do piping isometrics, process flow diagrams, drawing schedules, etc. totally in paperspace because they are not to scale anyway.

Our electrical and instrumentation guys also do all their diagrams totally in PS.

As remark says it all depends on what it is that you are drawing at the time.

Thanks! That sounds like a great idea.

Manager stopped by my desk and asked how things were going. I told him I was trying to work around the lack of templates and I explained that Mr. PDM had not done them yet. Manager said not to wait on Mr. PDM and for me to do what I thought was best for the electrical group.

I am the only electrical drafter in this business unit and part of what I was hired to do was develop standards and block libraries. Everyone else here uses Solid Works - they all do mechanical drafting - about 40 people.

I am making progress doing my own template and incorporating Mr. PDM's titleblock. Yes sir, yes sir three bags full.:D
