well, that's more a question of what kind of map that you are looking for.

Images you can import into AutoCAD and then plot, but it might not look too good.

If you are looking for maps more for site-plans or something, then you most likely need to pay for them.

How detailed do these maps have to be? Just the outline of the country's border?

A map of Europe, as drawn by Vladmir Michl (2007 file format; 272KB), can be found at the CAD Forum website. You have to be a member to download it though.

I am looking for road maps so i can plan a trip, cheers guys

Road maps? Good luck. An AutoCAD dwg file of a road map would be huge in terms of file size. I hope you have a multi-cpu quad core computer with a 1Terabyte hard drive and 64GB of RAM.

Why not just use Google maps?

Can I nominate this thread as the strangest request of the day? LOL

I would say this comes under the heading of trying to use AutoCAD for everything - I know that I've been guilty of this more than a few times.

I would suggest going to a well-stocked bookstore and buy a map and some nicely colored marker-pens

Imagine plotting a roadmap of Spain from AutoCAD. I wonder how long it would take and how much ink it would consume?

look guys this IS the beginers section, looks like im asking for the impossible then. i just thought that if i import to cad i could then use the plotter to print. thanks for all the answers and yes you can award me the wooden spoon of the week.

Always keep file size in mind. Pushing drawings in the 35MB, 60MB and up takes horsepower. Assuming you could find such a drawing do you have a computer that is powerful enough to work with very large file sizes efficiently?

Sometimes we overthink the problem. As Tiger said, some good maps and a set of markers seems to be a more logical choice.

Yes, we have a weird sense of humor. Sometimes it gets the better of us. No offense meant. Have a good, safe and enjoyable trip. Take plenty of pics then come back and post them in the Chat area.

I apologise if you feel offended Ktmjunkie, that was not my intent. It is simply that once in a while we get requests that are better solved using other means than AutoCAD but we as autocad-users are sometimes so set in our ways that it's hard to think outside the box.

About using the plotter from AutoCAD - that plotter is installed on your computer so you should be able to use it anway.

If you want printable road maps to plan a trip. Use "Google Earth maps" or "Map quest"

Google Earth is a free down load.
