Please tell me how to draw spur gear and how to mate them together?

Posted

You might try taking a look at past threads about drawing spur gears. Use the Search feature above.

I think I even recall a lisp routine that will create a gear based upon user input but can't recall where I last saw it. Would have to take a look around.

You're doing this in 2D right?

oo.. Tq... I'm not doing it in 2D. I want to do it in 3D.. Btw, what is the lisp routine. I can't open it.. Is it an add-on to solidworks?

Posted

Once you have made the gear in 2D it can be extruded.

A lisp routine is a program that accomplishes a certain task. Check the CADTutor AutoCAD FAQ section under Customization for instructions on how to load and use a lisp routine.

Autolisp routines are not add-ons to Solidworks.

Are you working in Solidworks? It would have been helpful to know that when you posted your question don't you think?

The poster posted it in Autocad Beginners area.. perhaps by mistake?

Sya, if you are using Solidworks then you should mention that when you post a question, so as to not waste everyone's time pointing you to tutorials and lisp routines for Autocad. Posting in the correct area of the forum would also help to lessen the confusion.

I've moved this question to the Solidworks section.

Actually i'm quite new in forum.. I never post to any forum. This is my first time... I'm so sorry... Not just the forum but I also new to Solidworks.. Thank you for your replies..

There have been several threads about gears. If you look around the dark blue boarder there is a Search This Forum option that will allow you to search just in the Solidworks section. Here is one thread about gears and mates.

There are a lot of built in features that will allow you to insert standard gears. Do you have any more specs besides just spur gear? Is this going to be part of something larger or are you just trying to understand gears in solidworks? The more information you can give us about what you are trying to do will help us answer your question the best way possible.

Welcome aboard:)

Thank you.. I want to understand the gears, how to make them move together and also i don't know if i have to design the gears according to real specification or i just try to make them myself, i mean the dimension. The gears actually have to be assemble with other components like motor and shafts.

Well there are a few ways to actually make gears move. Before you get into something advanced like gears you should make sure you have a good understanding of basic modeling.

That being said when you are adding mates between components there is a Mechanical Mates tab which has several gear mates. These mates are purely mathematical and have nothing to do with the actual shape of the gears and how they interact. For instance if you had two straight cut gears, one 10tooth and one 20 tooth, the gear mate would impose a 2:1 ratio so when the 10 tooth gear rotates two times, the 20 tooth gear rotates once.

If you get into advanced motion studies you will actually be moving gears based on contact between them.

As far as creating the gears it really depends on what you want to do with it. In the Toolbox there are several standard gears you can choose from and customize. This may be easiest to start with but again you need to understand basic modeling before trying to move into something like this.
