I have this really time-consuming assignment using solidworks modelling up a game pad. Could someone help me figure out why i can't add in a curve. Here is a screen dump - if it's not clear i can try and send through the PDF instructions.

im not sure i follow what your problem is. What do you mean you cant add a curve? What operation are you trying to use to make the controller?

Here are the instructions i'm following, this might make it a little clearer... i'm up to the 3rd page trying to add a 'projected' curve to the drawing.

what error are you getting? Are you using Sketch on sketch for your projected curves? is your first sketch a closed profile with no open contours? I couldnt make out all of the specs but i drew something similar just now and it works fine.

also i noticed a problem with your drawing. The images you uploaded for the instructions show the origin centered on the drawing so your mirror centerline is across the origin. This means you dont need to create a plane for your second sketch. Also you have 3 sketches when only two should be there. whats on the 3rd?

As a note in your feature tree, next to your sketches the (-) means under defined.

Oh now i understand why when i was trying to draw on the rp it wasn't starting from the centre of the sketch... i'll go back and draw it from the origin then. The error coming up when i try to add the projected curve is something like too many open contours... ?

Thanks for your help by the way, my teacher is hopeless with returning emails!

Well the project curve looks for a single continuous loop in each sketch. If you have more than one you will get an error. So you need to make sure your controller half is one spline and there are no other lines in the sketch that are not construction lines.

Ok so i've redrawn it now so the origin is in the centre and i have converted entities... it says something about 'resolve ambiguity' and then we are supposed to click single segment which is how im assuming you make it so its only one continuous spline... however this didn't come up on mine? how do i make it so its one continuous spline?

Do you think i could send you the file so you can tell me what i've done wrong.. i'm just really not getting this.

which version of SW are you using? if its 2009 or older i can look at the files but if its 2010 i will not be able to open them.

The issue with your preview of the projected sketch/sketch is because your spline is outside of your arc curve(drawn on the right plane). Even if its not noticable it may be a small amount.

I found the tutorial online and took a look through it. This is some pretty advanced stuff. Is this what you are starting with? Or have you completed some other work. I will gladly look at your stuff/help you out but I would suggest starting with some more simple surfacing examples before tackling this project.

I am using 2009-2010, i am 2nd year I.D student and this is the first major surfacing assignment we have gotten. I don't know why they have given us such an advanced brief its stupid but if i don't do it i'll fail...

The lecturer has said we can finish it at page 78 - i'm just going to try my best, if i can't do it then i can't do it.

What is your email address so i can send the file?

after you have 10 posts we can use the PM system. Id rather not post my email on a public forum so i dont get an inbox full of junk mail.

So your lecturer is using someone elses tutorial for the class?

What else have you done up until this point? Any surfacing?

My main problem looking through the tutorial is that it just tells you every step to do and not really why or what you are actually doing. For such an advanced topic I don't think the point would get across to the user. So if you do something a little different you wouldnt see what the problem is since you don't know whats happening.

When I do something like this in the classroom I first go through several "dead ends" with the class and then show them the "right way". Often I have to revise my "right way" as someone makes a good alternative discovery along the way.

Certainly advanced topics should include professional instruction rather than just an assignment of "do this".

I know, the other lecturers have agreed it's an extremely unclear tutorial - and they have only given us a week and no class time as we were on holidays. Another class only has to do up to page 30! How do you use the PM system?

This is what im up to now... but i realized the origin is in the wrong spot again... how can i change this without having to redraw it all. Im up to page 5. It's not letting me send you a private message either!!
